Shooters and Hunters are exposed to some of the loudest, noises anywhere in the world. A single gunshot can cause lasting hearing damage. Even small caliber weapons such as a .22 create unsafe noise levels. Once your hearing is damaged, it can never be repaired.
A recent study discovered that men who had engaged in target shooting during the past year were 2 times as likely to suffer hearing issues as those that hadn’t. Hunters, by comparison, can spend hours in a deer stand before firing off a single shot. More than 95% of hunters in the study reported never wearing hearing protection. And in the target shooting group, a gigantic 38 % admitted they never protected their ears. The study showed how tragic the consequence of not wearing simple hearing protection, and it only takes a few moments to put on.
It does not take long to cause permanent hearing impairment, particularly if you are a trap shooter or high-powered-rifle competitor and if you are out there without protection, it may only take 2 days. And at this point in our science, once your hearing is gone, it’s gone, there is not bringing it back.
To appreciate what’s really taking place within an ear, think about the cochlea, a fluid-filled, snail shell shaped organ buried deep in the inner ear. Sound travels thru the air as pressure waves that are funneled down the ear canal to the eardrum, which vibrates like a little drum. Cilia in one area, the so-called fundamental turn, are prepared to jiggling by high-frequency sounds. Though most tinnitus sufferers, will come to accept the ringing in the ears, and other annoying sounds, there will be many for whom the tinnitus is unremittingly and it makes their lives miserable. In rare cases, some have even elected to have their inner ears surgically altered to stop the humming, whirling and buzzing.
The good news is that you do not have to dispose of the sounds of gunshots you just need to reduce them to safe levels. If you are shooting an especially high-powered firearm or end up on a range surrounded by other target shooters, pros endorse doubling up for the best protection. Ear plugs, are good for deer stand hunting, but target shooting, skeet shooting or conditions where the gun if fired repeatedly they won’t do.You will need to get ear muffs and earplugs doubled up or electronic Hearing Protection. I fired 22’s in my youth and still have lasting effects from that. I still go shooting, but I am sure to wear ear plugs.
