Performing Live

Category: General

If you want to give your best singing performance, you need to know how to behave, so here are a few live performance tips to help you out:

Rehearsals

Rehearse with the band. Before you go on stage, have a minimum of one dress rehearsal. For the last rehearsal and dress rehearsal you should sing the music from memory.

Outfit Selection

The outfit you select needs to be a good one, because it can make your show. When you choose an outfit, make sure that you wear it during rehearsals so that you get used to it. Make sure that you can move and breathe in the outfit you have chosen to wear.

Walking across the stage

Practice walking to the place you’ll stand on the stage. Walking across the stage is much more difficult than you would think. You want to stop in place but also find your posture as you stop. Walk to the spot and keep your posture.

Keep the speaker turned away from you

The experience of singing with a band will be a lot of things, but initially it will be confusing. The speakers will probably be turned away, in which case you will have trouble hearing yourself. For the first few times you could ask to have a speaker turned towards you. The sound from the speaker can be a distraction, especially if you consider how loudly the band can play. You need to learn to pick out the instrument that plays the melody line.

Remember to smile

Make sure you smile as you go on stage. A smile will make you appear to be confident, which will boost your performance. Make sure your smile doesn’t look fake as you cross the stage.

Acknowledge your audience

When you are singing, you might not know when it’s time to pay attention to the audience. Singers won’t always sing in a small place. The best thing you can do is watch the professionals and see how they do it.

Distractions will occur

In a normal concert there can be a lot of distractions. People cough, enter late and even leave right in the middle of your song. Most people are ignorant as to  how this can distract a performer, and because you are the performer you are expected to be professional about it. That being said, it would be wise to stage a few distractions as you practice at home. If you have any friends, you can have them try distracting you, and over time you will learn to ignore it.

Keep an eye on your hands

Make sure you don’t do anything strange with your hands while you are performing; keep them at your sides if you can. Though your sides might not seem like a great place, it is at least a safe place. If you gesture, then make a complete gesture, because anything incomplete or half done will make you look nervous. Clasping your hands in front of you is another option for your hands.

I hope these performance tips were helpful to you. In order to wow your audience you’ll need to work hard to perfect your singing skills.
