Hearing problems in anyone are cause for concern. Hearing problems can come on suddenly, or may be a natural procession of aging. Hearing loss in older individuals is called presbycusis, and occurs due to changes in the middle ear as we age. It is still a mystery to why presbcusis occurs in some individuals and not others. It does run in families, so genetics may play a role in the natural occurrence.
Other causes for hearing loss are loud noises. This is a condition called noise induced hearing loss. Many factory workers, construction workers, musicians, gardeners, hobbies, airport personal, and others who work or live around harmful levels of noise can be affected by noise induced hearing loss.
High levels of noise can also harm, or damage the inner ear hairs that conduct noise through the inner ear causing another condition called Tinnitus. Tinnitus is described as a ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring that is an unrelenting sound.
Hearing problems can arise from having a virus, a bacterial infection, head injury, or taking medications. If you experience sudden hearing loss, you should contact your doctor right away. If an infection is caught early your doctor may be able to prescribe medication that will prevent permanent hearing loss.
